Getting found on Google, for Cork businesses. In October 2026 we checked where the 20 businesses Google Maps showed first in Cork turned up: Google Maps, the ordinary results, the ads and ChatGPT's answers. This page shows what we found, and one step to take in each place.
The map and the ordinary results hold mostly different businesses. In October 2026, one of the 20 businesses Google Maps showed first in Cork made the first ten ordinary results for its own search. So we looked at each of the four places on its own, and at what you can do in each.
Each has its own section below, with what we found and one step to take.
Checked · Study by Michael Collins, founder · How we checked
I set the rules for this study: one town per county, the same five searches in each, the businesses Google Maps shows first, and no business named.
Claim your Google Business Profile and fill it in: that profile is your listing on Google Maps. In October 2026 the top four in each Cork Maps list had more reviews and sat closer to the centre: a median of 158.5 reviews against 28 for the other 125 businesses in the same lists, and a median of 0.35 km from Cork city centre against 1.1 km.
Cork's top four were rated no higher: a median of 4.85, the same as the rest. All 20 list their opening hours, and all 20 have claimed their profile.
Among the 26 towns in our county study, only Dublin's top four had a higher median for reviews (310.5). And 16 of Cork's 20 had a new review in the 30 days before our check, more than in any other study town; across all 26 it was 218 of the 505 businesses Google Maps showed first.
| Distance from the centre | Top four in Google Maps | Rest of the list |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 0.5 km | 13 | 50 |
| 0.5 to 1 km | 1 | 11 |
| 1 to 2 km | 2 | 31 |
| 2 to 5 km | 3 | 29 |
| 5 to 10 km | 0 | 4 |
| over 10 km | 1 | 0 |

Not every profile shows every figure: the median rating for the rest is over the 118 with a figure and the median photos for the rest is over the 120 with a figure.
"Website linked on the profile" counts any web address in the profile's website field, a Facebook page or a site that no longer works included. "A website of their own" counts only the business's own working site, wherever we found it.
A median of 158.5 reviews, against 28 for the rest of the Maps list.
A median of 0.35 km from Cork city centre, against 1.1 km.
All 20 list their opening hours, and all 20 have claimed their profile.
18 of 20, against 83 of the 125 further down the list: somewhere to send a customer from the profile to check a price, call or book.
That is what they share. It is not proof of what put them there: Google doesn't publish how it ranks the map. And we searched from Cork city centre, so a customer searching from somewhere else can see a different map.
Across the 112 searches in our all-Ireland study, comparing businesses inside the same search, more reviews went with a higher place on the map in 89% of searches, and being closer to the town centre in 96%.
Your own website works on the list under the map: across our five Cork searches, local businesses' own websites took 22 of the 50 places in the first ten ordinary results. And it's where a customer goes from your Google profile to check a price, or to call or book.
Pick a time for a free 15-minute call and tell us your business name and town. You'll get a straight read on your Google profile and where it shows up in the map.

With a page of your own that answers the search. The ten ordinary results under the map box are web pages, not Google profiles. Across our five Cork searches in October 2026, local businesses' own websites took 22 of those 50 places.
In Cork, one of the 20 businesses Google Maps showed first made the first ten for its own search, and 13 of the 22 local websites there belong to businesses outside the first 40 in Google Maps. So the first ten is open to a business that is not in the map's top four.
Across the 26 towns in our county study, 100 of the 505 businesses Google Maps showed first made the first ten for their own search. Cork is level with Dublin and Navan, and only Tullamore had fewer.
"plumber cork"
"electrician cork"
"cafe cork"
"hairdresser cork"
"physio cork"
| Search | Local business website | Directory or listing | Social media page | News, forum or national chain | One of the top four |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| "plumber cork" | 7 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| "electrician cork" | 4 | 5 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| "cafe cork" | 1 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 0 |
| "hairdresser cork" | 3 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 0 |
| "physio cork" | 7 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 0 |
On 14 October 2026, Google showed an AI Overview above the results on two of the five Cork searches: "cafe cork" and "hairdresser cork".
Directories and listings took 14 of those 50, most often Golden Pages with three, Tripadvisor with three and Bark with two.
Social media pages took 8 of the 50 places. Social media
Google ads put your business in the sponsored spots on the searches you pick, and you pay when someone clicks. In October 2026, 8 of the 18 Cork businesses we could look up by web address had a Google ad shown in the 30 days before our check, going by Google's own ad records. Counting ads from any date, 9 did.
When we searched, at about 1pm on 14 October 2026, none of the five searches showed an ad. That is one look at one moment: budgets run out, and ads can be set to run at certain hours. Treat it as a reason to check your own. Google's own estimate of what one click on an ad costs ran from €0.21 for "cafe cork" to €5.02 for "electrician cork".
Cork's 8 of 18 with an ad in those 30 days was the highest share of the 26 towns in our county study; across all 26 it was 39 of the 322 businesses we could look up.
Google's own estimate of the average an advertiser pays for one click on an ad shown for that search. Google reports this estimate in US dollars; we converted it at the European Central Bank reference rate on 14 October 2026 (1 euro to 1.1195 US dollars). It is Google's estimate, not a Wagyu price. Google gave no figure for "physio cork".
Google's ad records are looked up by web address, so the two with no website are left out.
With more reviews, a higher rating and a place on the sites it reads. Across our all-Ireland study, more reviews and a higher rating went with being named by ChatGPT. For Cork, in October 2026, we asked ChatGPT, with web search on, "Who is a good [trade] in Cork?" three times for each of the five trades. The sources it cited most were directories and listing sites, 19 of 43, then local businesses' own websites, 13.
ChatGPT named 10 of the 20 businesses Google Maps showed first in Cork at least once, plus 21 others, 7 of them outside the first 40 in Google Maps. Of the 31 businesses it named, 21 turned up in some answers and not others.
Across the 26 towns in our county study, ChatGPT named 275 of the 505 businesses Google Maps showed first. Cork's 10 of 20 is a little under that, level with Ennis, Letterkenny, Tralee and Mullingar.
Each answer can cite several sources; 43 in all across the 15 answers.
They have a page of their own: what the sites have, what they miss, and four fixes for a Cork website.
Send your website address and you'll get a straight read on how it shows up on Google, from the map to the ordinary results.

11 of 20 businesses Google Maps showed first replied to none of their ten newest reviews
The reviews keep coming at the top in Cork: 16 of the 20 had a new one in the 30 days before our check. Ask every customer for a review when the job's done, and reply to each one you get. Keep the profile full too: the top four had a median of 35.5 photos against 16 for the rest.
19 of 20 businesses Google Maps showed first did not make the first ten results for their own search
Most of the top-four sites in Cork have the title right: 12 of the 15 we could read put the trade and the town in it. Go further with a page for each service that answers what people ask. On our Cork searches, Google's "People also ask" box asked "How much is a plumber per hour in Ireland?"
5 of 5 trade searches showed no ad when we looked
Of the 18 Cork businesses we could look up, 8 had an ad shown in the 30 days before our check, the highest share of any study town, yet none of our five searches showed one at about 1pm. Search your trade and town at a few times of day, and if your ad isn't there, look at the budget and the schedule before you spend more.
10 of 20 businesses Google Maps showed first were not named by ChatGPT
Across our all-Ireland study, more reviews and a higher rating went with being named by ChatGPT, and for Cork it cited directories and listing sites most: 19 of 43 sources. Keep the reviews coming, and get onto the directories for your trade with the same name, address and phone as your Google profile.
Euroconcrete is a construction firm in Skibbereen: we designed and built the site, and set up the hosting, analytics and Google Business Profile under it. For the Southern Star, a West Cork newspaper, we've looked after the website's ad revenue and the ad partners behind it.

More reviews, and a shorter distance from the centre. In October 2026, the 20 businesses Google Maps showed first in Cork city, across plumbers, electricians, cafes, hairdressers and physio and physical therapy clinics, had a median of 158.5 reviews against 28 for the other 125 in the same lists, and sat a median of 0.35 km from Cork city centre against 1.1 km. All 20 had claimed their Google profile and listed their hours.
In the ordinary results under the map. Across our five Cork searches in October 2026, local businesses' own websites took 22 of the 50 places in the first ten, and 13 of those 22 belong to businesses outside the first 40 in Google Maps. A website is also where a customer goes from your Google profile to check a price or the area you cover, or to call or book.
It names some. In October 2026 we asked ChatGPT, with web search on, "Who is a good [trade] in Cork?" three times for each of five trades. ChatGPT named 10 of the 20 businesses Google Maps showed first in Cork at least once, plus 21 others. Of the 31 it named, 21 turned up in some answers and not others, so any single answer is one moment. Across our all-Ireland study, more reviews and a higher rating went with being named.
It depends on what a job is worth to you against what a click costs. In October 2026, 8 of the 18 Cork businesses we could look up had a Google ad shown in the 30 days before our check, the highest share of the 26 study towns, but at our one check, at about 1pm, none of the five searches showed an ad. Google's own estimate of what one click on an ad costs ran from €0.21 for "cafe cork" to €5.02 for "electrician cork".
We searched Google for plumbers, electricians, cafes, hairdressers and physio and physical therapy clinics in Cork on 14 October 2026, on a phone, logged out, from Cork city centre. From each Google Maps list we took the first four local businesses, after removing chains, wrong trades, duplicate listings and businesses outside the county: 20 in all. Four per trade is enough to count, but too few to compare one trade with another, so this page doesn't.
No. We work with businesses across Ireland. The study looked at Cork city because our method takes the biggest town in each county, and in County Cork that is the city.
